Tapas Bar im Melia Hotel – English

As a Berliner, I’m not very often at the Friedrichstrasse. It is rather a tourist area with respective restaurants and, of course, prices. However, after having been to a show at the Admiralspalast, we were thinking of having a drink before returning home.

So we went down the Friedrichstrasse and noticed the Tapas Bar at the Melia hotel. After checking the menu we decided to try the place. We took our seats on the sun terrace with a nice view over the river Spree though it was raining heavily. We were sitting quite comfortably under the big parasols (being suitable for rainy days as well :-))

Beer and wine prices were rather high. 0.5 l beer for six Euros – about twice as much as in “regular” places. 0.2 l wine cost from 6.50 Euros – restaurants in the non-tourist areas of Berlin start with approx. four Euros for 0.2l.

In contrast, the prices for the tapas were reasonable. The small bowls cost 2.50 Euros; the big bowls cost six Euros each. We ordered a big bowl each of garlic chicken and meat balls in tomato sauce. Additionally, we had two small bowls of chorizo in wine sauce and one small bowl of balls made of mashed potatoes and minced meat. We liked the tapas. Only the garlic chicken could have been a little spicier.

The staff were friendly and attentive. That’s something I expect in a place like this. As we noticed from a conversation with the waiter at the next table, they speak German, English and Spanish – probably due to the fact that the Melia hotel is run by a Spanish hotel chain.

On our way home, we went through the hotel lounge. Everything looked very nice and inviting. We noticed several check in counters and a separate table for “V.I.P. check in”.

We would recommend the place for having a drink after attending a show at one of the numerous theatres in the area. When meeting with friends, I would prefer places in the non-tourist areas of Berlin as they are a lot cheaper.
